The Joy of Spring Cleaning
Facts about your favorite cleaning Products and alternatives that are better for your health
Everyone enjoys having a clean smelling and feeling house.Spring cleaning gives us the opportunity to start a new.To purge and release those things that no longer serve us.It is a time for renewal.Personally I love this time of year to clean my house my body and soul in the process of renewal and rejuvenation.
When I went to a lecture given by Dr. Doris Rapp- author of Living In A Toxic World at the University of Chapel Hill North Carolina Alternative Medicine Conference a couple of years ago, I was made of aware of the many dangerous chemicals in our cleaning products So I started some of my own research. I found out startling information about what is in my all purpose cleaner: carcinogens and glycol ethers, among other things.Animal studies have shown that these glycol ethers can cause testicular damage, reduce fertility and increase birth defects to name a few.
According to the EPA, the air inside my home is three times more likely to give me cancer than the air I breathe walking down the street, and my tried and true cleaning products play a bigger role in that toxicity than I ever imagined.
When doing the research what I found was disturbing. You can spend 15 minutes cleaning the shower, and you could inhale three times the “acute one-hour limit” set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard assessment for glycol ether-containing products.
Janitors, people that clean houses, children in schools, people who clean their homes and everyone around them are affected by these toxic chemicals according to a study in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.
A nationwide study by the US Geological Survey showed that nearly 70 percent of streams tested contained breakdown products from detergents, 66 percent contained disinfectants.
Can my cleaning be polluting my house and making me sick?
